People hold up signs during a protest against indigenous leader Alberto Pizango outside Nicaragua's embassy in Lima June 9, 2009. Pizango, who has been accused of sedition for leading protests against energy and mining development in the Amazon, has sought asylum with the government of Nicaragua. Potentially lucrative oil and mineral reserves lie in Peru's vast Amazon region, but its Indian inhabitants are furious at being left out of plans to profit from the jungle. The signs accuse Pizango of being an assassin and Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega of being complicit with Pizango in the deaths of the policemen who were killed in clashes with natives in the Bagua province last week.
