FINISH TOURISTS IN CAPTIVITY IN JOLO, SOUTHERN PHILIPINES.
Finnish hostages Juhani Sappo Franti (L) massages his foot while Mirco Jahanen Risto (C) scribbles a note to their embassy inside a hut at the kidnappers' hideout on Jolo island May 1. Three journalists from international news organizations were allowed by the fundamentalist Abu Sayyaf group to accompany a Filipino medical doctor to see their 21 captives. The hostages were taken to Jolo after Moslem fundamentalist rebels, who are fighting for an independent Moslem homeland in the southern Philippines, seized them on April 23 on the Malaysian resort island of Sipadan.
