FOUR OF THE 21 HOSTAGES IN CAPTIVITY IN JOLO.
Foreign hostages Sonia Wendling of France, Marie Moarbes of Lebanon, Marc Wallert of Germany and Juhani Franti Seppo of Finland sit in a shack at a hideout on Jolo Island in the southern Philippines May 1. Three journalists from international news organizations were allowed by the fundamentalist Abu Sayyaf group to accompany a Filipino medical doctor to see their 21 captives. The hostages were taken to Jolo after Moslem fundamentalist rebels, who are fighting for an independent Moslem homeland in the southern Philippines, seized them on April 23 on the Malaysian resort island of Sipadan.
