The origins of the Hungarian Mangalica pig can be traced back to 1833 when the first pigs were brought to Hungary from Siberia. The pig was heading for extinction in the 1990s when it was rediscovered by Spanish Serrano ham producers who have given new life to a declining industry. The low cholesterol content of the pig meat has also led to greater consumption by more health conscious Hungarians.
