Pope John Paul passes in front of Swiss Guards before his annual state of the world address to diplomats accredited to the Vatican January 11. The Pope gave his official blessing to Europe's new common currency, saying he hoped the euro would help the continent's common destiny. The Pope also said the recent U.S.-led bombing raids in Iraq showed that war does not solve problems but only complicates them.
