Pope John Paul II pauses during a Holy Year ceremony attended by some 1,500 Roman Catholic bishops in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican October 7, 2000. During the ceremony the Pope prayed near the statue of the Madonna of Fatima which he had brought to Rome from Portugal. The 80-year-old Pope believes his life was saved by the Madonna of Fatima during a 1981 assassination attempt.
