Pope John Paul II leaves a confessional booth in St. Peter's Basilica after hearing the confessions of thirteen people selected at random on Good Friday March 28. The 76-year-old Pope, who normally only hears the confessions of close aides, began the Good Friday tradition a year after he was elected in 1978. The Pontiff spoke in five languages to the six men and seven women who confessed to him.
