POPE JOHN PAUL II WAVES TO WELL WISHERS DURING A MASS IN THE TOWN OF
BANSKA BYSTRICA.
Pope John Paul II waves to well wishers during a mass in the town of
Banska Bystrica September 12, 2003. A somewhat stronger and refreshed
looking Pope John Paul comforted victims of Slovakia's communist past
at a mass for tens of thousands on Friday, partially allaying growing
fears over his health. Although the 83 year-old pontiff appeared in
better form than on his first day in the country Thursday, Vatican
officials decided that a cardinal would read most of his sermon to ease
his burden during an open air mass in the old city of Banska Bystrica.
