Leu Peih-lin, a senior seismologist at Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau in Taipei, contrasts two earthquakes measuring more than six on the Richter scale that struck Taiwan within the space of half a day on June 14, 2001. The latest quake, measuring Richter 6.2, struck at midmorning but did not claim any casualties. A giant earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale killed 2,400 people on September 21, 1999.
