INDIAN POLICEMAN STANDS GUARD IN DHARAMSALA.
An Indian police officer stands guard at the entrance of the residence of Tibet's spiritual leader Dalai Lama in the northern Indian town of Dharamsala on January 11. Tibet's government in exile said on Monday it was hopeful India would respond favourably if it sought asylum for a top lama who had fled Lhasa from China-controlled Tibet. Karmapa Lama, who arrived in Dharamsala on January 5 after an arduous 1,400-km (875-mile) trek through the snowbound Himalayas, had to be shifted to a secret hideaway on Sunday because there were fears for his safety.
