Stefan Cristian, a member of Romania's ethnic Roma community, uses traditional tools to handcraft a broom in his home yard in Neajlov village, 30 km southwest of Bucharest June 10, 2013. Stefan and his family produce brooms which they sell for a meagre 7-8 lei (about 1.7 Euros) per piece to the marketplace to eke out a living. Romania, which joined the European Union in 2007 together with Bulgaria, is the second poorest member and is still struggling to recover after a credit bubble boom and bust in 2009. Living standards have barely improved since accession and GDP per capita remains at about one third of the bloc's average. Millions of Romanians fled the country after communism collapsed in 1989 mostly in Italy, France and Spain, countries to which it shares a Latin root language.
