People queue for food during an event organised by the British embassy to Romania, Bucharest townhall and various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Bucharest December 11, 2013. Hot meals are offered to the poor and the homeless during the annual event in an effort to raise awareness to their increasing number in the European Union's second poorest country. British labour restrictions on hiring workers from Romania and Bulgaria were imposed in 2007, when both countries who are the poorest members within the wealthy European bloc joined the EU, limiting their citizens the opportunity to work in Britain. From January 1, 2014, remaining restrictions for Romanians and Bulgarians, whose minimum wages barely exceed 1 euro per hour, will be lifted by all EU member states.
