The Romanian court where the trial against former jailer Alexandru Visinescu began on Monday, is pictured in Bucharest July 14, 2014. The trial of the 88-year-old, accused of beating and starving inmates in the 1950s and 1960s, is a landmark case in Romania's efforts to deal with the legacy of Communism and the first of its kind in the 25 years since the fall of Communist dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. Visinescu, a retired lieutenant-colonel who ran the Ramnicu Sarat prison in southeastern Romania from 1956 to 1963, is charged with genocide, which is listed under crimes against humanity in the Romanian penal code and refers to attempts to fully or partially destroy a community or national, ethnic, racial or religious group.
