The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarberg, visits a cemetery in Beslan
The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarberg, visits the cemetery in Beslan February 26, 2007 where the people who died during the 2004 siege of a school are buried. Hammarberg on Monday visited the Beslan school that was seized in 2004 by pro-Chechnya rebels as part of his Caucasus tour that will also take him to the Chechen capital of Grozny. Gunmen seized the school and took more than 1000 children and parents hostage on the first day of the new school year on September 1, 2004. More than half of the 333 hostages killed during the three-day siege were children. REUTERS/Sergei Karpukhin (RUSSIA)
