RUSSIAN NEO-PAGANS CELEBRATE SUMMER SOLSTICE IN A FOREST.
Russian neo-pagans dance by a huge fire as they celebrate the pre-Christian holiday Kupala, the day of the summer solstice, in a forest 140 kms south of Moscow, June 20, 2004. Dozens of worshippers, many of them accountants or students in day-to-day life, erected a huge fire and chanted ancient hymns, read out poems about pagan deities and prayed to holy relics made from wood and stone. The Pagan festivities of the solstice were appropriated to the Feast of John the Baptist. REUTERS/Viktor Korotayev AS/CRB
