Roy McLachlan, managing director of South African firm Agave
Distillers, points to a Blue Agave plant in Graaf Reinet, April 17,
2003. The cactus-like plant is used by Mexicans to make fiery tequila
liquor, and the South African company has begun making its own
cactus-juice spirit using a slightly different variety of the plant
that grows in the dry and inhospitable Karoo region of the country.
Bottles of the spirit, named "Agava", are flying of the shelf in South
Africa, while the firm is also exporting concentrate to North America,
Australia and Europe. REUTERS/Toby Reynolds TO BE RELEASED WITH FEATURE
