SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT WORKERS EVICT SQUATTERS FROM SOWETO.
South African security workers demolish shacks as thousands of poor
families are forcibly evicted from their makeshift homes in Soweto west
of Johannesburg January 7,2002. Armed police protected private workers
who demolished shacks on Monday where about 2,000 families had lived
since 1991, after Soweto residents complained the squatters were
fanning crime in the township, once the heartland of the anti-apartheid
struggle. REUTERS/ Juda Ngwenya
