SOUTH AFRICAN TEENAGERS LOOK AT PICTURES OF SOWETO UPRISING WITH PHOTO-JOURNALIST ALF KHUMALO.
A group of swaggering South African teenagers suddenly falls silence as a veteran photo-journalist Alf Khumalo (C) shows them a June 16, 1976 photograph of a burning building near their Soweto school during an uprising against the apartheid government's plans to enforce Afrikaans as the language of instruction in schools. The 10 months of violence that followed claimed almost 1,000 lives and heralded the coming end of South African apartheid. Picture June 13, 2001.
