United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan (2nd R), his wife Nane (R),
South African President Thabo Mbeki (2nd L), and his wife Zanele look
at some fossils on a visit to the Sterkfontein Caves, some 40
kilometers north of Johanneburg 1 Spetember, 2002. Gauteng province
Premier Mbhazima Shilowa hosted Thabo Mbeki as well as Kofi Annan here,
at the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, a site at which some of
the most significant fossils, including remains of "Littlefoot", an
almost complete hominid skeleton believed to be some 3.3 million years
old, have been found of our earliest human ancestors. (man L is
