MUSLIM STUDENT READS KORAN AT A MADRASSA IN ISLAMABAD.
A young Muslim student sways as he memorises verses from the holy Koran
at a madrassa in Islamabad January 14, 2002. Pakistan President Pervez
Musharraf said that new Islamic religious schools, or madrassas, will
have to register with the authorities and any school involved in
militant activity will be closed down. The thousands of madrassas in
Pakistan have long been seen as breeding grounds for Islamic militants,
and gave birth to the fundamentalist Taliban militia that took power in
Afghanistan in 1996 but collapsed late last year under U.S. attack.
