BASQUE POLITICIAN MARIA SAN GIL TALKS DURING AN INTERVIEW.
Maria San Gil, the deputy mayor of San Sebastian in Spain's Basque region, talks during an interview in this March 30, 2001 file photo. San Gil never doubted for a moment that when she entered Basque politics in 1995 that she was putting her name on ETA's hit list. ETA, which began as a reaction to fascism, is now accused of using equally brutal methods to silence those who oppose it. ETA is the last major guerrilla group still active in Western Europe, waging a war of attrition that has claimed 800 lives.
