ROWERS DRIVE HAND MADE WOODEN BOATS DOWN ESCA RIVER.
Almadieros (traditional rowers) row their hand-made wooden "Almadia"
boats down the Esca River near the Basque town of Burgui in Northern
Spain May 4, 2002. Almadias was an ancient method of transporting wood
from the high forests to the sawmills. Villagers commemorate the date
when the last Almadia crossed the town of Burgui in the spring of 1952
constructing four Almadia boats and driving them down the river.
