A flower of crocus sativus, the saffron crocus, is seen in full bloom at a field during the saffron harvest in the central Spanish village of Consuegra October 28, 2010. For centuries, saffron has bedecked with purple in the Spanish plains where fictional character Don Quijote tilted at windmills and delicately flavoured paellas. It takes 400,000 stems to make up a kilo of saffron, which retails at about 10,000 euros ($14,000), although a few fragrant threads only are needed to give a typically tasty yellow tinge to traditional rice dish paella.
