Mark Fretta, one of the United States' top elite triathletes, considered a strong contender for the Olympic team, collapses after injuring himself during Hawaii's Olympic qualifying race in Honolulu, Hawaii, April 18, 2004. Fourteen U.S. men and 14 women were competing for spots on the Olympic team in Athens this August. Hawaii's first-ever Olympic qualifying triathlon was the first of three before games in Athens this August.
