Solar Impulse's Chief Executive Officer and pilot Andre Borschberg flies the solar-powered HB-SIA prototype airplane at sunrise during the plane's first night flight attempt near Payerne airport July 8, 2010. The propeller plane, with a 61-metre (200-foot) wingspan, is powered by four electric motors and designed to fly round the clock without traditional aviation fuel or polluting emissions by saving surplus energy from its 12,000 solar cells in high-performance batteries. The plane took off for its first 24-hour test flight just after dawn on Thursday; it will run on stored power during the night and land at Payerne Friday morning.
