Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian (4th R) and Premier Chang Chun-hsiung (2nd R) walk in front of the statue of former Taiwan president Chiang Kai-shek at the newly reopened National Taiwan Democracy Memorial Hall in Taipei January 1, 2008. The former Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall building was built by the previous Nationalist (KMT) government in memory of the late leader until his death in 1975. The ruling Democratic Progressive Party re-named the hall as the National Taiwan Democracy Memorial Hall earlier this year and completed replacement of its name plaque and an inscription on its arch gateway in December 2007, amid protests from KMT supporters.
