TAIWANESE ACTIVISTS CHANT ANTI-U.S. SLOGANS OUTSIDE WASHINGTON'S REPRESENTATIVE OFFICE IN TAIPEI.
Taiwanese protesters chant anti-U.S. slogans outside Washington's representative office in Taipei December 4, 2000. A handful of demonstrators were protesting against U.S. demands that Taiwan levy taxes on all locally-made wine, including rice wine, after the island joins the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Rice wine, a widely-used seasoning in Taiwanese food, will rise from NT$25 ($0.75) to NT$100 a bottle if Taiwan accedes to the request. Taiwan is widely expected to join the world trade grouping after China enters next year. REUTERS/Simon Kwong
