JAMES SOONG AND CHANG CHAO-HSIUNG SUBMIT RECOMMENDATION LETTERS IN TAIPEI.
Independent presidential hopeful James Soong (R) and his running mate Chang Chao-hsiung (2nd R) submit on January 6 a box of recommendation letters to the Taipei Election Affairs Committee from more than 1.5 million voters supporting them to run for presidential and vice presidential elections in March. Under Taiwan election law, recommendations from at least 224,429 eligible voters are required in order to register for presidential candidacy. Soong, former Taiwan governor and right-hand man of President Lee Teng-hui, is running against Lee's favoured successor Vice President Lien Chan. As a result, Soong was expelled by the ruling Nationalist Party.
