TAIWAN PRESIDENT CHEN SHUI-BIAN PINS LIEUTENANT'S BARS ON A MILITARY
ACADEMY GRADUATE IN TAIPEI.
Taiwan president Chen Shui-bian pins lieutenant's bars onto a military
academy graduate during a joint graduation ceremony for the island's
six military schools in Taipei on July 12, 2001. This year, the United
States sold Taiwan eight submarines and four destroyers in the biggest
arms package for the island in a decade, souring relations with
Beijing. China considers Taiwan a breakaway province that must
eventually be reunified, by force if necessary. A portrait of Sun
Yat-sen is seen in the background.
