A TAJIK MAN CARRIES A SACK OF FLOUR IN THE VILLAGE OF DZHARTEBA.
A Tajik man carries a sack of flour on a donkey in the village of
Dzharteba some 180 km from Dushanbe as he greets a cyclist going in the
opposite direction, October 18, 2001. As relief efforts intensify in
Afghanistan, drought-hit farmers in Tajikistan to the north are reduced
to selling the roofs of their houses to buy food and medicine and
children dig through parched earth to steal back grain hoarded by rats,
aid workers said on Friday. Picture taken October 18, 2001.
