Peak of Mount Kilimanjaro is seen from an aircraft in northeastern Tanzania
The peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, or Kibo, is seen from an aircraft in northeastern Tanzania October 31, 2005. The name Kilimanjaro is from Swahili and means "the mountain that glitters". It is composed of three extinct volcanoes; Kibo at 5895 metres (3.6 miles), Mawenzi at 5149 metres (3.2 miles) and Shira at 3962 metres (2.3 miles). It is one of the world's highest freestanding mountains, but Kibo has been eroded by glaciers, rivers and landslides to its present height and it is believed that like its neighbour Mt. Kenya, is losing glaciers due to global warming. REUTERS/Nina Schwendemann
