An African giant pouched rat sniffs the soil during training to detect landmines in Tanzania.
An African giant pouched rat tethered by a harness sniffs the soil in Morogoro, Tanzania September 10, 2004 as 250 rats are trained by scientists of Belgium's demining APOPO organisation and Tanzania's Sorokine University of Agriculture to use their olfactory sense to point out landmines. Unexploded ordnance and landmines are a menace in many African countries and the scientists idea is to get an alternative method to detect landmines that works well in Africa.
