Shigeki Hori, a researcher at Tokyo's University of
Electro-Communications, demonstrates a prototype January 10, 2002 of a
self-balancing robot 'parallel bicycle' that remains upright in a
similar way to the Segway Human Transporter, the two-wheeled scooter
once code-named "Ginger". Professor Kazuo Yamafuji, said that he
developed the idea for a self-standing machine 15 years ago and that
his idea came before award-winning U.S. inventor Dean Kamen, who
unveiled Segway last month. REUTERS/Toshiyuki Aizawa TO ACCOMPANY
