Thai journalist reads Bangkok Post newspaper during seminar in Bangkok.
A Thai journalist reads an issue of the Bangkok Post newspaper during a seminar in Bangkok September 15, 2005, about a group of journalists who plan to protest the purchase of the Thai-language daily Matichon by entertainment company GMM Grammy. Paiboon Damrongchaitham, head of Thailand's largest music company, announced on Tuesday the purchase of significant stakes in two of the country's leading newspapers, Matichon and the English-language Bangkok Post. Paiboon has denied being a proxy of Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, widely accused of trying to curb what was once one of Asia's freest presses. Companies associated with Thaksin's own business empire have already acquired several television and radio stations, and his political allies have also made media acquisitions.
