A two-year-old elephant named Pechmanee gives dry food to a Buddhist
monk under the direction of its master during a New Year festival in
the northern Thai province of Ayutthaya, 80 km (50 miles) north of
Bangkok, on January 1, 2002. Thais typically give alms to Buddhist
monks on the first day of the new year, and on other important Buddhist
ocassions. Elephants are considered holy animals in Thailand.
