RESIDENTS GREET AN AUSTRALIAN SOLDIER IN MALIANA.
An Australian soldier is greeted by residents of Maliana after his unit entered the town October 6. Maliana was formerly a stronghold of the pro-Jakarta militia who are estimated to have killed thousands in East Timor after the territory voted August 30 for independence from Indonesia. Maliana's population has either been forcibly deported to West Timor or is hiding in hills to the south. Some are hiding in caves, waiting for the Australian-led Interfet force to arrive.
