East Timorese queue up to cast their vote in Manatuto, 40 km east of
the capital Dili in the country's first democratic elections August 30,
2001. East Timorese kept what the United Nations has called a date with
democracy on Thursday when they voted in the first democratic election
of their turbulent and bloody history.
