88-seat constituent assembly began on Sunday, six-and-a-half weeks
ahead of the tiny territory's first democratic elections. It is
scheduled to end two days before polling on August 30, the second
anniversary of a 1999 vote in which East Timorese overwhlemingly chose
to split from Indonesia after 23 years of often brutal rule.
