Eyadema's sudden death on February 5 after a 38-year rule plunged the tiny West african country into political turmoil. Eyadema's death sparked a political crisis as the army bypassed the constitution and named his 39-year old son Faure Gnassingbe president, triggering African sanctions, street protests in Lome and international outrage.
