SIEMENS CEO HEINRICH VON PIERER GREETS TAIWAN MINISTER AND PRESIDENT IN TAIPEI.
Heinrich von Pierer (L), chief executive of German technology giant Siemens AG, shakes hands January 14 with Taiwan Minister of Economics Wang Chih-kang (R) at Taipei's presidential office as President Lee Teng-hui (C) looks on. Von Pierer, whose company makes locomotives for the European bullet train known as Eurotrain, flew to Taipei after Taiwan High-Speed Rail Corp dumped Eurotrain in favour of Japan's Shinkansen system for its US$14 billion island-spanning bullet train. Von Pierer was pressing Taipei to enforce a 1997 Taiwan High-Speed contract that granted priority negotiating rights to Eurotrain for core rail and train contracts worth about US$3 billion.
