ECUADOREAN CITIZENS TRAVEL IN THE BACK OF A TRUCK.
Ecuadorean citizens travel in the back of a truck during the first day
of 48-hours bus strike in Quito, May 8, 2002. Ecuadorean bus drivers
blocked traffic on Wednesday as part of a 48-hour strike for higher
fares as police and soldiers took to the streets in major cities to
keep the roads clear. City bus drivers want Ecuador to raise the most
widely charged fare to 30 cents from 20 cents, arguing a December fuel
price hike has made it tough to make a living, but authorities fear
this could spur inflation.
