Tilly Smith (R) of Britain, 11, dubbed the "angel of the beach," reads a passage from a poem about the tsunami during a first anniversary memorial in Khao Lak, in Thailand's Phang Nga province, about 110 km (68 miles) north of the resort island of Phuket December 26, 2005. Smith became a hero after she recognized the warning signs of a tsunami and shouted to foreigners and Thais to run away, saving dozens of lives. Thousands of locals and foreigners gathered in southern Thailand to commemorate the December 26, 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which killed 5,395 people and wiped out 47 villages along the country's Andaman Sea coastline.
