Kurdish women wearing colourful traditional dresses to celebrate Newroz on the outskirts of Diyarbakir March 21 during festivities marking the Kurdish new year. A banner carried by a young man reads in Turkish "Abolish villlage guards system and emergency rule" which asks for an end for the emergency rule in the area. Residents were ferried by buses and minibuses to an open concrete space eight km (five miles) outside Diyarbakir to celebrate the festivities which was dominated by a bonfire lit by officials from HADEP party.
