Yusuf Kagwa, 45, who suffered severe jigger infestation, sits on his bed at his home in Buyende district, eastern Uganda August 5, 2015 after being discharged from the Sole Hope medical centre. Left untreated, jigger parasites can lead to secondary infections that can be fatal. The problem of jiggers, female sand fleas that burrow their way under skin, is widespread in the eastern, northern and northeastern parts of Uganda. NGO Sole Hope works with local and international volunteers to treat sufferers, removing the parasites either with safety pins or razor blades. Kagwa, a farmer, was infested and had the parasite all over his body. Volunteers counted 2,555 parasite burrow marks before he received treatment.
