Father Valery holds an icon as he stands in front of a site cordoned off by riot police after previous clashes with anti-government protesters occurred in Kiev, January 31, 2014. During the two months of anti-government protests in Ukraine that called for the resignation of President Viktor Yanukovich, the country's clergy has not been standing on the sidelines. Priests lead daily prayers in the tent city at Independence Square and offer spiritual guidance to both protesters and police officers entrenched at their positions on both sides of the barricades. Father Valery has come from his hometown of Poltava to join the protest camp, in order "to fight together with my people against the evils of corruption and political abuse by our leaders," he said.
