The Wider Image: A year into Ukraine war, older refugees running out of hope
Ukrainian refugee Tatiana Potapova, 62, who is from Slabozhensky, takes a traditional Polish donut during an evening for pensioners to share Polish and Ukrainian traditions of Polish Fat Thursday and Ukrainian Stritennia, organised by the Senior Club at the Zustricz Foundation in Krakow, Poland, February 15, 2023. The day the war began, Potapova’s hometown near the Russian border fell under Russian occupation and she and her family could no longer travel to areas under Ukrainian control. "It was impossible to leave the house, it was scary, Russians were checking everyone," she recalled. But Potapova's daughter, who has diabetes and uses a wheelchair, needed medicine, while her grandson showed symptoms of trauma. In the end, she said they had no choice but to leave, fleeing through Russia and Estonia to Krakow, where her elder daughter lives.  REUTERS/Kacper Pempel SEARCH "PEMPEL ANNIVERSARY REFUGEES" FOR THIS STORY.
