A Washington State Department of Transportation demolition crew begin taking down the now-closed Alaskan Way Viaduct, a major arterial road along the downtown Seattle corridor on October 21, 2011. The 1950s-vintage highway which sees more than 90,000 vehicles a day, was closed on October 21 as workers begin to demolish the earthquake-damaged structure. Puget Sound residents are struggling to find alternate work-commute routes during the closure to avoid metropolitan gridlock. Picture taken October 21, 2011.
