Scott Hart, Washington State Department of Transportation assistant project engineer, secures a fence of the now-closed Alaskan Way Viaduct, a major Seattle arterial road along the downtown corridor on October 22, 2011. The 1950s-vintage highway which sees more than 90,000 vehicles a day, was closed on October 21 as workers begin to demolish the earthquake-damaged structure. Puget Sound residents are struggling to find alternate work-commute routes during the closure to avoid metropolitan gridlock.
