Members of the media watch while firefighters prepare to battle a live fire during an experiment on Governors Island, in New York, July 3, 2012. The New York City Fire Department created the experiment to study how new construction material and synthetic foams, which have become much more common in household furnishings, affect the way a fire burns through a building. The fires were started in decommissioned buildings that were scheduled to be destroyed and were previously used for Coast Guard housing. The buildings were rigged with temperature sensors and heat-resistant cameras so that the fire could be monitored by firefighters and experts.
