Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown speaks during the annual remembrance in memory of the assassinations of former San Francisco Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk, in San Francisco, California November 27, 2012. Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office in the U.S., and Moscone, revered by many as an early proponent of gay rights, were assassinated by former Supervisor Dan White at City Hall in 1978 due to White's discontent with the mayor's refusal to reappoint White to the Board of Supervisors after White's resignation and Milk's lobby against the reappointment.
